I wish there had been more structure, there was no end goal or anything which made staying engaged really difficult.

Make sure you are clear on the expectations of the position before you begin to make sure it's something you really want to do!

What I liked

I loved how much thought was put into the program. They had so many resources for support and cared deeply about your success within the program and after your experience is over. Great opportunities for connections and leadership showcasing.

What I wish was different

One can only hope there would be more activities in-person in the future! That was not something they could control with the pandemic, though. No cons otherwise.

Always be curious and ask questions about anything. People are happy to help you and make sure you are getting the most out of this experience.

What I liked

It was interesting work, also liked getting acquainted with university research environment and getting to know professor well. I am also glad to have understood what the field is like.

I wish I had been more involved on the lab environment side, but due to COVID-19, that was not possible.

Advice

Having had a summer internship lined up but cancelled due to COVID-19, I was disappointed to not have an industry experience. However, what I learned is that even through research or any experience working intimately with the subject, you can still figure out if that field is for you.

Human Resources Intern

What I liked

I was given fantastic responsibilities and autonomy within my role, and had the pleasure of working with an outstanding team of professionals. I was invited to participate in interviews for a wide variety of positions throughout the university, as well as interview committee meetings before and after the interviews were conducted. I developing a user-friendly forum for Interview Architect Software, sat in on employee relations and disciplinary meetings, and even taught a class about Resume and Interviewing Skills!

What I wish was different

I wish I was assigned even more responsibilities! Although I enjoyed the autonomy, I could have handled more projects!

Advice

In terms of applying for a job or internship, I would recommend spending time drafting a well written cover letter that is specific to the job description. As far as the actual work, I would recommend not being afraid to ask questions of the professionals you are working with, and absorb as much information and knowledge as you can during your time there! Also go out of your way to take initiative and be creative while working on your assignments and projects. Don't wait for someone to come to you with a task, ask what you can do to help!

My space was a bit cramped. It wasn't uncomfortable though.

Network! Working in the University you will meet so many professionals. Making positive impressions and speaking with them will open professional and personal development opportunities.

What I liked

I liked that I got to learn from a great team. The supervising leader was amazing and easy to talk to. I go to know everyone there and make a good relationship. Moreover, I was able to learn a great deal more about research in the work I was doing as well as various other fields.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been there for longer and continued to the research. I would not change anything else because it was amazing.

Advice

You have to be confident in what you do because you will be independent in the work that you are tasked to do. However, never be scared to ask questions so that you can properly complete a task and make the learning experience and outcome that much greater.
